Might seem like a dumb question but when someone refers to "operative
pleadings," what exactly are they referring to?

In other words, what pleading is defined as "operative" when you have a
complaint and up to five amended complaints?

Thanks-

In this context, it means the most recently amended version of the
pleading. The original complaint was superceded by the first
amendmend complaint and so on. The 5 previously complaints are
outdated and thus not "operative". In this case, the "operative"
complaint is the fifth amended complaint.
